Kancha Tomator Jhaal

How does one define comfort food? Something that imparts a sentimental value to you or something that makes you feel at ease?
What is comfort food? Can you relate to it? For me comfort food has a nostalgic value attached to it, something that makes me cherish a memory from the time left behind.

This particular recipe I am sharing has fond school memories attached to it. My bench partner/ best bud in +2 level shared her mum’s recipe with me. Green tomatoes were not a regular at my household in fact prior to this I was unaware of the fact that one can make such good use of them. Of course my mum added her own touch to the recipe I passed on to her and the end product was magical. This is probably a dish I can never give a pass to.
Simple, full of flavors and comforting!

Kancha tomator jhaal or Green tomato curry

Prep time: 10 mins       Cooking time: 20 minutes        Serves: 2

Here’s what you will need:

  • 4 big green tomatoes (finely sliced)
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 4 green chilies (preferably hot)
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tsp mustard paste
  • 2 tsp poppy seed paste
  • salt
  • sugar
  • 1 tbsp mustard oil

Here/s what you need to do:
In a hot pan pour some mustard oil, add crushed garlic cloves to it. Split the chilies into two and add it to the oil. As the garlic starts turning golden add the tomatoes and turmeric powder. Once the tomatoes start getting cooked it will release some water. When the tomatoes start loosing its texture add the mustard and poppy pastes. Add your desired amount of salt and give it a good mix. A pinch of sugar enhances the flavor. Let the mixture cook for about 5 minutes with occasional stirs in between. Once the mixture starts getting thicker and release oil from its sides cut off the heat. Let it cool before transferring it to a bowl.
